 WITHOUT WALLS, GERMANY 2002

“Through my journey, i had visited a place almost transparent, as if i could
see through the walls. I felt like an alien in this silence that surrounds me.
This was far away from the concrete noises of children running, a 10th month
old crying for his milk and a demanding husband just came back home from
work with a strong presence of alcohol underneath his breath. Through these
walls is below -10 degrees. Hardly you would see anyone peeping through
their windows with creative thoughts in their minds. Could it be the
temperature? Well i don’t know but an hour had passed and it felt like forever.
It was cold for me and i felt weak, taking my own sweet time to do almost
everything. Is this how i’m gonna be when i reach in my late 60s? But
somehow, i’m not worried but calm in this silence. To be in a place between
the boundaries that felt almost transparent.”

“Without Walls” series was taken in the outskirts of Bavaria, a small town in
Burgkirchen am Wald, Germany. My black and white photographs feature the
serenity and calm environment of an average living Bavarian family. During my
visits, i was amazed of the vast differences between the calm environment of
my “host family” in Germany and the fast pacing, money making society in
Singapore had led me to a culture shock. Like an alien in this strange new
world, i had taken this environment into a whole new perspective. Taking my
manual camera and just a standard lens in my hands, i had apparently gained
some casual compositions in a highly personal, observational style of these
photographs.
